How To Find A Qualified Home Inspector

Before you buy your home, it’s always a good idea to hire a home inspector to survey the house before the deal is finalized. When you are looking to hire a home inspector there are a number of things to keep in mind because this person can save you thousands of dollars later on by revealing problems you wouldn’t have seen. Sure a house might look beautiful and perfect, but underneath there are things to keep in mind and problems you could be avoiding. It can also help you prepare and plan for future maintenance your new home might need.

Things to keep in mind for a home inspector

  • Ask for their experience. For example, how long they’ve been in business? How many years has this person been doing home inspections? Do you do this full time? How many homes have you inspected? All great things to know before hiring a home inspector.
  • Ask what won’t be included and how to find out about those items.
  • Look for an inspector before you decide on a house. This will ensure you are not making any rash decisions on an inspector and you can be confident that this person will be right for you.
  • Find an inspector who isn’t a specialist. Meaning not someone who only knows about plumbing and electrical. You want someone who will be able to look at every part of the home, not just be on the lookout for certain aspects of it.
  • Make sure they aren’t biased. Sometimes when people have relationships with the seller or the real estate agent they might tell you things that aren’t the complete truth. When you hire your own home inspector you will know you will get all the information you need & will be confident there was nothing left behind.
  • Be sure your inspector is clear with what kind of home you want. Some people like “fixer-uppers” while others need their home to be move in ready. Make sure you talk with your advisor about your wants and needs and the purpose you want your house to be served.
  • Choose your inspector being clear about when you need your report done by. If you want a quick turn around time make sure your inspector can give you your finalized home report by when you need it. You don’t want to be put in a situation where you might lose a house because your inspector is taking their sweet time.
